En flugtvej er normalt defineret som værende gange, gangarealer og trapper, der kan bringe personer ud til et sikkert område. Nødudgange og flugtveje kan være de udgange man bruger normalt til dagligt, eller som udelukkende er dedikeret til formålet. Et flugtvejsskilt viser vej til nærmeste flugtvej, så alle i bygningen kommer hurtigt ud i en faresituation. Hvis der er mange udgange i en bygning, skal der derfor opsættes flere skilte. Loven kræver flugtvejsskilte i offentlige bygninger og på private og offentlige arbejdspladser, når ikke den nærmeste flugtvej er helt åbenlys.
